Cohos Trail to Remain Open

Cohos Trail Association Restructured

A previous White Mountains World post about the Cohos Trail closing must now be updated. Lainie Castine, the new secretary and treasurer for the Cohos Trail reports that the 162-mile trail will remain open in 2007!

This is good news indeed. The Cohos Trail is a North Country gem. Much of this hiking trail traverses wild and often less well-known and less traveled areas.

Kim Nilsen, whose vision lead to the creation of the Cohos Trail, had previously reported the Cohos Trail would no longer be maintained due to lack of funding and difficulties in maintaining remote sections in the northern Mountains of NH. The trail board had resigned and plans were made to take down trail signs and cover trail blazes.

An influx of volunteers and donations have resulted in a complete change of plans. The Cohos Trail Association has reorganized with officers and board members who for the most part live in Coos County NH. Kim Nilsen will continue on with the CTA in public relations and mapping.

President: Pete Castine, Pittsburg NH
Vice President: Stacy Boone
Lainie Castine: secretary and treasurer.

For 2007 a number of improvements to the Cohos Trail are planned.
